RealTerm with Windows 10.
Find a Trip Lite USB to serial cable if straight through serial connection not possible to your PC.  Originally, I could send CTRL+Q to initiate a tape read but inbound the data was not coming through (why is prob discernible but not my concern at the moment).

Use a null modem adapter.

RealTerm is very easy to use, here are the only changes I needed to make to the defaults.  Display tab "display as" binary.  all else as is/defaultPort tab 2400 baud (my reader's jumpered to this).  Data bits N/8/1.  DTR/DSR checked. Capture tab - check "capture as hex"

When I don't check "7 data bits" I get the same data but the extra 8th bit is captured from the tape. For my purposes I may need to leave this unchecked to ensure I am getting everything on the tape. Although I understand Teletype tapes and HEX listings, grabbing virgin tapes of unknown origin is a different science.
